Pretty afzelia
Afzelia spp.
Where does it grow?
Afzelia grows among savannah vegetation in dry regions of East Africa and in the rainforests of Western part of African continent.
Look
Sapwood is of light-straw colour and it is dramatically divided from auburn heartwood which gets intensive red-brown mahogany tint by maturing on light. Yellow or white remains in duct lumens can be visible. The funiculus continuance is often irregular and alternately rotary and the texture is rougher, but symmetric.
Qualities
Afzelia is wood with high compactness, when dried it is 820kg/m3. It is extraordinarily resistant wood, its quality can be compared to teak. It is very robust and its lifetime is very high. It is form stabile. Wood working is difficult, bending only to a certain degree.
It is a very valuable material for use in interior and exterior carpentry, for production of window frames, doors, stairs, railings etc. It is very convenient for production of flooring in public spaces, it can also be used in civil engineering and shipbuilding.
