Where does it grow?
It mostly grows in South-East Asia, mostly in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, in the regions close to the coastline and in higher locations to 400m above sea-level. It is also doing very well on some Pacific islands.
Look
Sapwood is light yellow, sap is 5 to 8cm wide, different heartwood is brown-grey to dark red-brown, distinctly separated.
Texture is lightly grained in tangential section and slightly striped in radial section. The look of the Merbau wood is highly decorative, it makes luxury impression.
Qualities
Merbau wood , often called kwila, is very hard, durable and resistant to all pests. Thanks to its solidity its working is difficult. Its joints hold excellently, it can be glued successfully, finished by lacquers and oils. It is often used for production of floors and in civil engineering because of its solidity and resistance to pests.
