Where does it grow?
It is wildly spread in North America, From South of Ontario in Canada to Texas and to the East from Maine to Florida. Related species can be found in South America. It is a light-demanding plant, it grows individually or in small groups, it is artificially spread also in Europe, along the walls or in deciduous forests.
Look
Its sapwood is nearly white, dusky, while the attractive heartwood is light brown and slowly changes to rich dark chocolate brown colour, often with purple lines. It usually has even funiculus, sometimes wavy. Its texture is moreover rustic but regular.
Qualities
Its compactness is medium, 640kg/m3 when dried and it is very form stabile when it is dry. It has good bending possibilities, it keeps the wood screws and nails very well, it is suitable for gluing. It is pleasure to work with this wood, it easy to stain and lacquer. It can be used mostly because of its decoration beauty in production of gunstocks, excellent furniture and interior alterations, wood-carving and production of decoration veeners.
